Miami High Tech, by Miami Today reporter Candice Ventra, condenses the latest news in the Miami Internet and technical worlds.

 

GO GO JOE: JoeDriver.com, a website for teen drivers, launched operations at 141 NE Third Ave. The site focuses on putting teens behind the wheel safely by providing information on several issues, including how to handle an accident and get car insurance, said R. Kirk Landon, retired chairman of the board of American Bankers Group and one of this company's co-founders.

ARIBA SYSTEM: The University of Miami has selected Ariba B2B Commerce Platform to improve management of internal procurement and operations at four campuses. Promoters said the Ariba system provides users access to more than 30,000 suppliers of professional services, among other things.

UPWARD TRUCK: Coral Springs-based PNV — a provider of telecommunications, cable TV and Internet access service targeting truck drivers — announced an unaudited net revenue of $5.6 million in its first year of operations. Details: pnv.com.

MS. BIZ: Women business owners take note. WomenBiz.gov has been launched by the National Women's Business Council to assist women-owned businesses that sell to the government. Details: WomenBiz.gov.

VENTURE CONFERENCE: The Florida Venture Capital Conference has decided to leave the Coral Gables Biltmore in favor of the Boca Raton Resort & Club for its parley Jan. 17 & 18. Conference organizers are accepting applications for that session and say they will select 25 Florida companies to make presentations to representatives of some of the largest venture capital firms in the nation. TRAVEL LAUNCH: Coconut Grove-based Depegar.com, a travel site in Spanish and Portuguese, has launched operations in the US. The site, promoters say, offers discounted travel fares and travel maps to users, among other things.

E-PAYMENTS: Miami-based Asista.com, an e-commerce site for Latin America, announced it will use Grupo Financiero Banorte, Mexico's fifth-largest financial group, to promote e-commerce services to Latin American countries. The two companies are developing electronic payment solutions, promoters say.

INTERNET PANEL: The Miami Internet Alliance will present a reception and panel discussion, "You've built it, but they will come," at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 28 in the Biltmore Hotel, 1200 Anastasia Ave. Coral Gables. Speakers include Xavier Mantilla, director of Engage Latin America; Bruce Mathew, vice president of business development at TigerDirect Inc.; and Sean Morgan, co-founder & senior vice president of emerging markets at Screaming Media.
