IT'S SEMI-LAUNCHED!: Terremark has launched an interim Network Access Point of the Americas, or NAP, at 1 NE First St. in Miami. Terremark is owner, operator and developer of the network — it's staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When completed, the station will become the fifth Tier One Internet Exchange in the US. PERMANENCE IN SPRING?: Construction of the permanent NAP is under way, said David Burns of Telecordia Technologies, the company that organized and designed the setup of Miami's NAP. Mr. Burns said completion is anticipated in the second quarter of this year. EPIK-GRAM: Among companies happy to take part in the launch is EPIK Communications in Orlando, which dispatched a national media advisory to call attention to its "enlightened optical fiber OC-192 domestic network," which is now connected to Terremark's network. "Being the first to light its fiber-optic network at the nation's newest Network Access Point in just one example of EPIK's leadership," said Benjamin Finzi, EPIK executive vice president and newly elected chairman and CEO of NAP of the Americas, the oversight body acting for the more than 80-member consortium of companies investing in the NAP here. CO-OPERATIVE THRUST: The NAP, says Manny Medina — Terremark chairman and CEO — "will become a gateway for all Internet traffic to and from Latin America, South America, the Caribbean and beyond." He said member firms in the consortium have adopted "the concept of `co-opetition' to bring the telecom industry together and make this project a reality."
