Marta Perez brings sense of duty, passion for education to her seat on the Miami-Dade County school board

An elementary-school teacher for eight years and a member of the Miami-Dade Public School Board for a similar length of time, Marta Perez once considered running for mayor of Miami-Dade County but instead pursued her passion as an outspoken advocate of improved learning for young people as a door to a more fulfilling life. Along the way, she has filed a lawsuit in District Court here seeking the right for school-board members rather than the district's superintendent to decide what items will be on the board's meeting agendas and to obtain from his office information she says she needs to comply with her duties as an elected official.
Dr. Perez explained her position in an interview with Miami Today international editor Michael Hayes.
