Marvin O'Quinn leading Jackson Health System through expansion while fending off funding cuts

Marvin O'Quinn spends his days on the front lines of the nation's health-care crisis, staring down the challenges of indigent care, the threat of state and federal funding cuts and the ever-shifting political and economic climate of health-care policy — all while keeping Jackson Memorial Hospital poised on the leading edge of world-class technological innovation.
Jackson spends about $500 million a year providing charity care, a level that is among the nation's highest and by far the highest in South Florida.
Under the four-year leadership of Mr. O'Quinn, who began his career as an orderly before rising through the ranks of several New York and New Jersey hospitals, the Jackson system has cut its deficits. It also has acquired or expanded hospitals in the southern and northern ends of the county to extend its reach and services. With the help of key political allies in Washington and Tallahassee, his efforts spared Jackson from millions in threatened funding cuts.
He discussed Jackson's challenges and successes with Miami Today staff writer Wayne Tompkins.
