Dr. Phillip George takes over as chair of UM Board of Trustees as university embarks on fundraising for ambitious capital plans

Plastic surgeon turned investor Dr. Phillip George is embarking on a new journey as chairman of the University of Miami's Board of Trustees. After 20 years as a trustee, he now takes the lead and intends to focus on continuing fundraising amidst a troubled economy and push for needed capital improvements.
Board members include business and community leaders. "All of us who do this give a lot of time, a lot of thought, a lot of money, and the only reason for it is to advance science, research and education," he said.
UM's endowment has been hard-hit by the plunge of the financial markets coupled with the recession, he said. "Our fundraising ability was hurt by people not feeling as wealthy — or actually not being as wealthy — as they were last year."
Replenishing lost funds will be critical to such projects as renovating University of Miami Hospital and construction of a law school building and a student union.
Dr. George shared his priorities as new chairman of UM's trustees with Miami Today staff writer Yudislaidy Fernandez at the campus in Coral Gables.
