FIU business school dean hunt in round 2

By Rachel Tannenbaum
The second attempt to replace the current dean of Florida International University's College of Business Administration marches on after a 6½-month search.
A national attempt to replace Joyce Elam, executive dean for FIU's business school, was unsuccessful three years ago, but the university's medical school dean, John Rock, said the search committee has already begun interviewing candidates the second time around.
"The search firm has had some candidates, about four, and we have even brought one in," said Dr. Rock, "but we continue to search and work with the search firm to find additional candidates."
Dr. Rock, who is on the search committee, said the hunt for a new executive dean began July 21. The 14 representatives are from schools like business, international studies and nursing.
Dr. Elam has led the business school for 14 years, with 2011-2012 her 15th in the post. The goal is to name a replacement this year, with the new dean starting work this summer. Dr. Elam is to serve as dean until a replacement is named and remain dean of FIU's University College, which encompasses non-degree courses and online offerings.
When it comes to qualifications for the new dean, Dr. Rock said the committee is looking for an effective fundraiser and someone who has a strong research and global business agenda.
"A big element we are looking for," said Dr. Rock, "is someone who is very much aware of global business issues and international issues with the business school."
